2018 elf 

The "Far Valley Elf" flew all summer, and was usually the first plane in the air at our morning sessions.

Spring - 2018

 
The first flight of the season (2018) was from the snow (!)  with my electric R/C "Jupiter Duck" on April 21st. Despite thinking that spring would never come, the snow was gone two weeks later - and flight operations began in earnest.

June - 2018

 
Oh... how the weather has improved - sunny days with temperatures in high 20s by mid afternoon, but still cool at nights (10-15C). We've had some excellent flying weather, especially in the morning before the wind picks up - our favorite time to fly!
 
My KK Competitor (from Vintage Model Co. kit) has now made a dozen or more trimming flights - all with a low power "test" motor - 25" loop comprising 6 strands of 3/16". It flies well under power, but turns too steeply (to the right) in the glide. Thus, I have not yet achieved the proper combination of rudder trim and propeller offset. In the video, it is flown "hands off" (freeflight) during the power portion - and you can hear Greg say: "You want your radio now?" as he hands me the Tx (off screen). R/C control not used until the power runs out, then had to add some left rudder to straighten it out in the glide. Ideally, this model should fly without any R/C control input - other than to steer it back to the field if it wanders too far away in the glide. Also seen in the video is the Far Valley Elf - which is a truly amazing little aeroplane - and is usually the first one in the air at our morning flying sessions.

July - 2018

 
It's been hot and dry here for most of the month, but we finally received some rain over past the few days. Not enough though, and could use some more. My experiments with rubber powered R/C continue, and I'm presently testing the 1939 design "Korda Victory". I have a lot to learn about handling of multi strand rubber motors, and step-by-step I'm increasing thrust and duration. The current motor is a 24" loop - 12 strands of 3/32" (as recommended by SAM website) which provides a spectacular climb to an altitude of approx 200ft. The smooth transition from climb to glide is a sight to behold, and a testament to this brilliant design. As we fly in the early morning, thermals are few and far between, but flying one of these classics is a very enjoyable experience nevertheless.

August - 2018

 
A busy month at Far Valley, with many enjoyable morning sessions. Lots of glider towing, and after many years of practice, we are finally getting the hang of it. Finding thermals in the early morning sunshine still remains a challenge. Depending on visibility, we often tow to 800 ft AGL, at which point the towplane is just a speck. Experiments with rubber power continued, with two new planes built and flown - "Miss Canada" and "KK Achilles".
 
"Miss Canada" or "Miss Canada Senior" if you prefer (it's a long story) was part of of series of progressively more advanced models used for training by the RCAF in the 1930s. I still have a lot to learn about handling these larger multi-strand motors - including proper lubrication and cording. However, as lessons were learned, Miss Canada made the best flight of the summer (just over two minutes). Click here for the video
 
The "Keil Kraft Achilles" was built from plans on Outerzone, and is "pure" freeflight. A challenge to trim, it's a fine flyer - and made many lovely flights in the still morning air Click here for the video.
 
On Saturday morning, August 18th, we marked a chalk circle at the centre of the field for some spot landing fun. Click here for the video!

September - 2018

 
Earl tested several new models at the field this summer, including this lovely balsa/ply electric semi-scale replica of Chris' full size "Paracoupe". This video was taken on an early test flight on Sept 9th.
 
Chris purchased a "new-in-box" Enya .09-IV on eBay and after 30 minutes break-in, it was installed in his vintage C/L Sterling P-40 Tiger Shark. It flies well, but the Enya still needs more break-in time. Video here.
 
Reliving our childhood, we dusted off some old control line models, built a few new ones, and the sound of Cox .049s was music to the ears! We need to get some new fuel next year. Video here.
